Fuel Pump Issues on a Harley Pan America? Here's how to fix it!

In today’s video, we replace the fuel pump on a 2022 Harley-Davidson Pan America, a job that’s becoming increasingly common as these Pan America Harley's as they pass the 10,000-mile mark. Many Pan America owners report fuel pumps starting to whine loudly on startup, struggle to prime, or show early signs of failure—sometimes earlier, sometimes later, depending on riding conditions and fuel quality.

Today we head over to Dave Buckner’s garage and walk through the entire process step by step. This video covers how to safely:
• Disconnect and remove the fuel tank
• Remove the fuel pump assembly from the tank
• Install a Quantum Fuel Systems fuel pump
• Replace the factory strainer with a new Harley-Davidson fuel strainer
• Reassemble everything and get the bike back on the road

There’s a lot of discussion in the Pan America community about unlined fuel tanks on earlier models contributing to pump failures. While some believe the updated lined tanks on newer models (including 2024+) help, fuel pump issues have still been reported on Pan America Specials and even CVO Pan Americas. Mileage and failure timing can vary, but the symptoms are often the same.

This install applies to pretty much all Harley-Davidson Pan America models, though some minor variations may exist. If you’re comfortable working on your own bike, this is absolutely a DIY-friendly job that can be knocked out over a weekend and save you a trip to the dealership.

If your Pan America fuel pump is getting noisy or showing signs of failure, this video will help you understand what’s involved and give you the confidence to tackle the job yourself
