On today’s 3-part video series, we kick off the trip on Highway 55 in Eagle, Idaho with myself (“J”), Isaac, and Kenny. From there, we ride up to Garden Valley to meet Bobby and Miyagi and officially start our 3-day Lolo Pass motorcycle trip—camping off the bikes and covering more than 1,000 miles along the way.
Things get interesting almost immediately. Shortly after meeting up with the boys, Bobby’s license plate comes flying off, and before we even make it to Stanley, his taillight decides to leave the bike too!
From there, we settle into some incredible highway miles, riding through twisty mountain roads, the Sawtooth Mountain Range, and along the Salmon River. The scenery was unreal, the weather was hot—but thankfully not too hot—and it was just an awesome day to be on the bikes.
We stopped for lunch at the Roadhouse in Challis, Idaho, but not long afterward Bobby had to pull over and adjust the pushrods on his Shovelhead. The bike was running rough, popping, smoking, and clearly wasn’t happy.
Once we made it into Salmon, we dug into it again. Bobby worked on the intake, coil, and a few other things trying to get the Shovelhead running right, but eventually we decided the smartest move was to park it for the night and figure it out in the morning.
We ended the day at a wonderfully sketchy, run-down campground in Salmon, Idaho after putting down roughly 260+ miles.
Despite the mechanical problems, it was an awesome first day—beautiful roads, plenty of laughs, roadside wrenching, and some damn good times with the crew.
